Step 1
To be able to transfer files to and from your webspace you will need a piece of software specifically used for transferring files.
This software, known as FTP software is readily available freeware from sites such as www.download.com.
Once you have installed your FTP software you will now be able to create your connection to your webspace.
Step 2
To connect to your webspace you will need to know the server name where your space is hosted.
To do this you will need to log in to your control panel at cp.streetwisehosting.co.uk and go to Account Control.
From the Account Control options you should then select Name Servers from the list. The Name Servers option should then give you the primary and secondary server names. Most FTP software only needs the primary server name so be sure to make a note of this, it should be in the form of (servername.bpweb.net).
Once you have noted this server name you should then go back to your FTP software and select 'Create New Connection'.
You should then be prompted for your Primary server name as well as your user name and password. Once all the details have been entered your FTP software should connect you directly to your webspace.
Step 3
Once connected to your webspace you should see 3 folders named cgi-bin, htdocs and logs.
Any web pages, images, features of your website should be uploaded to the htdocs folder. Usually this will be done using a drag and drop feature, so specific files can be selected and moved individually.
Your homepage must be named index.htm or index.html and all links within your site should reflect this.
The cgi-bin should only be used by advanced users using perl scripts etc on their webpages.
Step 4
Once you have uploaded all of your webpages and checked them in your internet browser you can close your connection, your FTP software should give you the option to save your connection so you do not need to input your details every time you wish to transfer files.
NB. You only need to be connected to the internet when you are physically transferring the files, at any other time you can remain off line.
